Bed Racing - Wahoo!

So today was the much talked about bed races. We get there way too early, so decided to fill our time eating a Kilwin's ice cream. I eat sweets about once a year (I prefer salty pretzels or popcorn) and decided today was the day. It was yummy, but then this happened. Hrmph.

Oh well, nothing a little water couldn't fix. I wanted Michael to climb this tree so we could be sure to get some good shots (I was wearing a dress), but he wouldn't do it. Party pooper. While we waited, several biplanes went overhead (pilots give tours). Every time they did, we thought they'd "poop" toilet paper.
Just about the time we forgot what we'd been standing there for, it was time for the action to begin. There were 10 racers (apparently down from 20 a couple of years ago). First up was the parade
so we could get a good look.

I'm thinking this guy thought he was still at the Great Battle from yesterday.
My absolute favorite had to be the "Clydesdales." They were awesome.

Cute Salsa Loca pepper.
Okay. On your mark...The teams went two at a time.

Go! Go! Go!

I have to say one team (Garden of Eden) ended up walking almost immediately. It's a looooong way to go really, so I don't doubt others lost their mojo eventually too. Can you see the finish line waaaaay down there?
I basically missed the second race thanks to these %#*! people. No one was supposed to be in the streets, and the police finally singled them out telling them to move back, but not soon enough...

Once they passed us, the two were neck and neck until one of the bed's front wheels broke off. The guys picked the front up and kept running, but I think the back wheels fell off too. We're not sure if they made it to the finish line. You can see what it did to the street though.

When the Clydesdales passed by, they were a blur. I barely got them. The girls certainly tried though.

These two did great!

Aqua was kicking butt, but it wasn't surprising.

A very large guy was sitting on the bed with the bubbles, putting a lot of weight on the thing. Enemy tactics? Not sure.

The funniest part though was when a guy went to pick up a gal and dropped her, on a curb (barely missing a puddle of water), landing on top of her. She was laughing, but she is going to have one heck of a bruise. The best part was when she went down, over 100 people moaned "Ooooch!" all wincing. Water-gun man was not helping!

Ah, good times (more photos). We're really trying to soak up the great weather. No mosquitoes either. Tomorrow are some Schooner Wharf wrecker's races, but we'll likely do something quieter. Anyone coming into town next week gets the Taste of Key West Food Festival on Monday (April 29th) and the Key West Song Writer's Festival starting Wednesday (May 1st) and running through Sunday (May 5th).
