Brr!

Well, it's official, we're freezing. It's been in the low 60s in the morning with some brisk winds. My feet don't thaw out until 2pm and that's with 2 pairs of socks on (we're both sleeping in sweats). I haven't posted anything recently because my fingers are frozen. Sure, some of you have it in the 30s, but we left the 80s and we miss that. Our next purchase will be an electric blanket. Seriously, my nose is running and I really am sitting on my couch right now with my hoodie up (although I suppose I should admit I'm not surrounded by icebergs -  I do keep looking though). The toilet seat is cold.  Michael's eyes water on his moped ride to work despite his sunglasses. Lest you think I exaggerate, even the cats are going around looking for slivers of sunshine.
Unseasonably cool weather last night in the Florida Keys, with temperatures bottoming out in the lower 60s. The low temperature of 62 degrees at Key West International Airport overnight tied the daily record for minimum temperature measured in Key West on November 9th, a record which was last set in 1956. Temperature records at Key West date back to 1872.
Shiver.

Luckily, the one thing the cold hasn't affected is food. As vegetarians, we're supposed to eat a lot of vegetables. You'd think. But we really don't (we quit eating meat because we love animals not because we're all that healthy). We eat a lot of junk food. We lived on popcorn while in St. Kitts its produce was so limited. So I've always wanted to join a co-op or something to sort of force us to eat better. If the stuff is delivered to our front door, maybe we'll actually eat/make it.

So I found out about Annie's Buying Club, which isn't as rigid as a co-op, and we've received two boxes of goodies so far. I like it! They don't quite deliver to our door, but one of their pick-up locations is just 3 blocks away. You know you'll get stuff to make a salad like tomatoes and greens, but you don't know what kind of tomatoes and greens you'll get (cherry tomatoes, kale, butter lettuce, dandelions, etc.). The box is a mix of vegetables and fruit. I can't remember the last time I had a pear, and this week we were very excited to get asparagus in the mix. Mini-watermelon? How cute! Sometimes we don't know what the heck to do with this stuff, so the website gives us links to recipes related to the food in the box. We really have been eating better. For $42 we get 1/2 box plus a dozen eggs every two weeks, which goes a long way because we don't go through this stuff all that quickly (it's a lot of food). We're now snacking on apples and oranges and went a record 6 days without having bags of chips in the closet (although some of that can be attributed to the fact that we're too cold to go to the store). Of course, today I plan to make kale chips, but, well, you can't change habits overnight...

    1. Thanks! That's the problem with having subscribers too - they miss all the good stuff on the blog site. I could force you all to come to the blog to get the full story, but that's not my style.

  3. Not knowing what a "profile" selection means I'll never-the-less say that home made kale chips are a big treat around our house. Cheers, Richard.

    1. Richard! I don't know what a "profile" selection means either (where'd you see that?) but now we have a thumbs down and a thumbs up for the chips and I decided I was too lazy to make them. The kale may just see some garlic and get sauteed up.
