Fantasy Fest for Pets

Yesterday's hilarity was the pet masquerade (Facebook) at the Casa Marina Resort. First of all, the resort was gorgeous, my pictures just don't do it justice.

Secondly - pet owners are nuts. I include myself in that statement, as I'm wondering if I start training my cat, Jack, now if can enter him next year as a Pussycat Doll - get it?  Of course, I'd enter in the owner/pet look-alike portion so I can dress up too.  I'll start him in the tutu. He likes it!

There were over 60 entrants to this affair so it spanned over two hours, but it was all for a good cause. It's the only fundraiser held all year by the Lower Keys Friends of Animals, so a big deal if you want to help their trap/neuter/release program (not that you can't donate anytime). And what a fun way to do it! My favorite had to be this woman. I didn't kill myself getting a great photo because I figured she'd be on stage later, but she didn't participate in the actual contest! Darn it - well, I would have voted for her. She had 3 dogs - one in the flower box she was carrying and 2 costumed pups on leashes.

Here were a few odds and ends before the show got started.

You'll note that there were 4 categories: Best Theme Adaptation, Best Look-A-Like, Most Exotic, and Junior Division. These are not the best photos I've ever taken, but you get the idea.  For now, MileZero has posted some fun pics, including a pig I missed.

Juniors:

The winners were: The Adams Family

The N. Roosevelt Blvd construction project (they held up a One-Way sign - the main road really is a mess)

and Chia Pet

Others:

Exotic:

Winners were: 3-headed Hellhound, guarding the Gates of Hell escorted by Punky Cold Medina

Lilly Scott and her goat, Jackie, as Lucifer and the Arch Angel fighting the A-Conch-Alypse (he would head butt on cue, but every time he moved he became a blur so you'll have to take my word for it)

Chihuahua, Bella, dressed in a handmade peacock feather gown.

Others:

Best Look-A-Like

Elizabeth McNulty and Pixie, the long hair chihuahua as A-Conch-Alypse mermaids

Andy Bathazar, Anesa Ahamad and Pixel, the Maine Coon Cat, all dressed in their rasta and dreads (all my pics of this cat were a blur - boo). I need that dreadlocks hat for my cat. Need....

Glee Higgins and her yorkie, Harlee, as "exotic darkness"

Others:

Best Themed

First place included a rabbit for their Alice in Wonderland theme

Super Conchs fighting the A-Conch-Alypse (they were TALL)

Cuddles & Twinky as Alien tourists at the end of the World

Others:

The Super Conchs costumes were quite impressive, but the simple Pink Panther was great too (love kitties!)

Eventually all my pics were just blurs (too much/not enough lighting), but see if you can get this one. This girl dressed like the Coppertone Baby and tied a puppy to a rope to her bottoms. The clueless pooch just walked around, but it would yank at the girls pants, pulling them down like in the ad. Funny.

There was a Saint Bernard and a monk, 3 girls dressed in gold and hard hats with their 2 small dogs dressed like money as they came on stage to Kanye's song Gold Digger, and Great Danes as Apocalypse Horsemen... Seriously, how do people come up with this stuff?!

Overall Best in Show

Chihuahuas, Mr Hefner & Isabelle as Under the Sea Romance Divers & Mermaids

The organizers have started posting the pics on their Facebook page, so you can get a much better picture (um, literally). Pretty crazy huh?

Today we're getting some rain from Hurricane Sandy and some gusty winds, but nothing that would cancel Fantasy Fest (despite the rumors). There are a lot of theme parties going on tonight, so if it's not too cruddy out, we'll find a place to plop ourselves and see what we see. Soon it'll be parade time!

  1. The person with the flower box costume was Carolyn, she works at the Gecko. She couldn't stay long enough to do the event. Great costume.

    1. What a shame, I think Carolyn and her pooches would have placed. Well, I'm glad she came out while she could. Fun stuff!
