So what do you do when the pressure of public speaking (in Toronto) and the physical stress of running 13.1 miles is behind you? Party! One of the things on Tina & Ron's to-do list was to watch the sunset, so we headed for Sunset Pier. Ok, here we are. Hey - where's the sun? I think it's around this thing...
Yep. We've got a good spot. Beer? Check. Sun? Check.
And then, just as the sun was heading for the horizon, the ship moved forward. Are you kidding me?! While we stood there in disbelief as the cruise ship started to block our view again, it spun off and got out of the way. Ship - you're lucky!
There, now we're ready.
Hey! What the? Did that ferry just go in front of the sun? %!#@!
Ok, it's out of the way. Now, we're ready for the sunset. Yes, that sailboat is about to pass in front of the sun, but that was different. Very nice.
Now isn't this romantic? Gross.
Run! It's coming right at us!
Never mind. This captain had some cojones, he veered off just feet from the pier. Jeez.
Then we decided to check out a street party that was being held for the sailors participating in the week-long Quantum Premiere Sailboat Race going on offshore. There are some great photos of the race here. (BTW, Tina and Captain Ron used to race, and Tina is a photographer who has captured her share of cool race pics *available for purchase, so fit right in). Drink tickets were something like $2.50 each so we were quite excited; excited enough to take a photo of one of us buying one.
Doing this before dinner turned out to be very bad idea (the drinks, liberally doused with Mount Gay rum, were terrifyingly strong). We tried to resolve this by eating some great popcorn, but I can't say that worked. We did get a whole bunch of cool plastic cups though (white for popcorn/clear for rum or beer, I switched).
It was cool to watch the day's events flash by on the big screen.
Once the booze kicked in, Michael got brave enough to try this weird contraption set up by Lewmar (they make winches, including the ones we had on Jacumba). Apparently whoever could crank the thing to some specific goal in the fastest time would win something.
Eventually we saw two people winching together, so the next thing you knew Ron and Michael were on it. Did they win? Who knows, but they certainly cranked it out.
The following day, Ron and Michael had to work, so Tina and I tried to find a good spot to watch the sailing races. We headed to Louie's Backyard, where we could see the boats waaaaaaaaay in the distance.
I think we got more excited when this hawk flew past us with a fish in its talons.
We did wander over to the Casa Marina next door just for the heck of it, and there was a guy there working away at some sand sculptures.

More walking and then a return to the apartment to rest our weary legs (I had run 6 miles that morning despite being sore from the marathon, and my legs were not happy about it). Because we've had so few people (none) over to our apartments, both in St. Kitts and here, our cats are not the most social creatures when it comes to strangers (I talk about them on the blog occasionally as proof they exist). By the end though, Tina and Jack were good buds.
Our final night included some filling Mexican food (after all three ding dongs got off their cell phones), and a stop at Captain Tony's, another must on their to-do list (after the meal this time so there was much less imbibing).
And they're gone. Just like that. Darn. We were just invited to attend an event that's part of the Food & Wine Festival this Saturday, so we still have something to look forward to. A big craft fair is over the weekend too, so we'll check that out too.

Among other things, I'm a blogger. My last one was
Ha! That big ship? MS Ryndam, which I used to command. I believe Mark Rowland is the master now.

So, if I have another issue with a cruise ship blocking my view, I'll be sure to let you know so you can call your cohorts and have them move! Of course, if it's you onboard, we'll have to get together for a drink on said boat - hee!
DeleteIf I'm onboard you'll definitely be looking down to the dock with large drinks to toast the crowd. :)
